Our Fathers. Who aren’t in Heaven
Father’s Day 2008
Father’s day is a secular celebration which was started in the early 20th century. Although there is no defined origin of the day, many believe it was in response to Mother’s Day, which was first inaugurated a couple of months earlier.
Different countries pay homage to their fathers on varied dates throughout the year. In Roman Catholic tradition, the celebrations take place on Saint Joseph’s Day, the 19th March. In Taiwan, Father’s day is celebrated on the 8th day of the 8th month (8th August) and in Thailand, the celebrations take place on the 5th December, coinciding with the birthday of their current king, Bhumibol Adulyadej.
One thing that remains throughout every country in the world is the celebrations that occur on the day. Cards, gifts and general good deeds towards the father figure are all commonplace on this most special of days.
